Kiosk Peripherals

To be effective, kiosk applications often require more than a touch screen and a PC. As a result, Riva Logic offers a number of kiosk peripherals that enhance the functionality of our interactive kiosks. Some peripherals are standard features on select Riva Logic kiosks, while others are optional add-ons. Either way, Riva Logic integrates all required peripheral devices into our kiosk enclosures during production.

Keyboard / Trackball
While touch screens are a standard feature of all Riva Logic kiosks, we can also incorporate an industrial strength keyboard/trackball unit when needed. This is particularly useful for HR, banking and e-mail kiosks, which often require users to input data. The trackball is also useful for navigating web sites that are not particularly "finger-friendly" - that is, sites with small text links that are hard to accurately touch with a finger.
Unlike desktop keyboards, the keyboard/trackball that Riva Logic uses is designed to handle the rugged demands of public use. All of the keys (along with the trackball) are sealed against water and dust, and they cannot be removed from the keyboard. Furthermore, the letters & numbers are laser-etched into the keys (rather than being printed on), so they will not rub off over time.

Thermal Printer
For kiosk applications that require printing, Riva Logic uses high-quality thermal printers designed specifically for kiosk use, which have a number of advantages over inkjet/laser printers.
Thermal printers jam far less frequently than regular printers, which is an important kiosk maintenance issue. They also do not use ink, so you will not have to replace ink cartridges, which further reduces kiosk maintenance. Thermal printers also have less moving parts, which makes them less prone to breaking. Furthermore, thermal printers present a printout to a user only after the print job is completed. Users are not able to rip paper out while it is printing, which can lead to paper jams. In addition, these printers will retract printouts into the kiosk after a preset amount of time if a user has not taken them, in order to help avoid litter around the kiosk.
Unlike the poor print quality associated with old-style thermal fax machines, our thermal printers provide a high-quality output which is sufficient for most printing needs.

Proximity Sensor
Proximity sensors detect the presence of kiosk users, and can thus serve two important purposes when integrated into a kiosk.
First, they can detect an approaching kiosk user and launch an audio/video greeting, making a kiosk even more interactive.
Even more importantly, proximity sensors can detect when a kiosk user walks away from a kiosk, which is useful for automatically logging users out of secure applications. When a user walks away, a proximity sensor triggers commands to close a kiosk's browser. This in turn clears the cache, removes cookies, and sends the kiosk back to its attract mode.
With a configurable range of 1.5 to 5 feet, proximity sensors are particularly useful for banking, e-commerce and HR applications, where privacy concerns are paramount.

Overhead Monitor
Sometimes one monitor isn’t enough. Riva Logic’s overhead monitor is an ideal solution for increasing your kiosk project’s visual impact. The 19” monitor is housed in a stylish metal chassis that attaches to the base of our Barbados & Caicos kiosk models. The overhead monitor and touch screen both connect to the same kiosk computer, but they can display separate content. This enables you to display interactive content on the touch screen, with looping video presentations overhead. The result: your message reaches a wider audience. Best of all, this overhead monitor can be easily retrofitted onto existing Riva Logic kiosks.

Security Mat
Along with proximity sensors, security mats are useful devices for automatically logging a user out of secure applications (banking, e-commerce, HR). Security mats are placed on the floor, in front of a kiosk. Kiosk users stand on the mats during kiosk usage, and the moment they step off of the mats and walk away, the kiosk closes the kiosk browser, clears the cache, removes cookies, and sends the kiosk back to its attract mode. This ensures that personal information from one user session is not available to the next user.

Headphones
When kiosk applications involve an audio component, headphones can be used to confine sound to the kiosk user. This is particularly useful in environments where kiosk audio may be distracting to others. The headphones that Riva Logic uses are similar to the headphones found in many CD-listening stations. They feature rubberized, armored cables, which helps protect them from vandalism

Telephone Handset

If your kiosk project has a need for telephony, we can add a rugged telephone handset (with armored cable) to our kiosks. A kiosk equipped with a phone handset can be useful for a number of applications.
For example, this is an easy way to connect kiosk users with help desk support, using existing phone lines and autodial functionality. In addition, a phone handset can be used in conjunction with our QuickPath building directory software, for one-touch dialing of building tenants. Phone handsets can also be used for making phone calls via the Internet (VoIP).

Infrared Port
Infrared ports provide a wireless link for transferring information from kiosks to handheld devices such as PDAs. For example, a tourism kiosk with an infrared port can allow tourists to instantly download information about local attractions & restaurants to their PDA.

Card Reader
Magnetic card readers are useful for a variety of applications, as they can capture data from credit cards, debit cards, ID cards and driver’s licenses. When integrated into Riva Logic’s kiosks, card readers can be used to log users into secure applications (banking, HR), perform transactions (electronic ticketing, e-commerce) and more. Riva Logic can either integrate our kiosks with existing card-enabled applications, or develop such applications from the ground up, based on our customers’ needs.

Wi-Fi
Are you ready to join the Wi-Fi revolution and generate additional revenue at the same time? Use your Riva Logic kiosk to create your own "Hot Spot". If you're already running high-speed Internet lines to your kiosks, this will allow you to sell your extra bandwidth to anyone with a Wi-Fi-enabled laptop PC (or PDA) in the vicinity of your kiosk.
The process is very easy. Through its partnership with Airpath Wireless, Riva Logic will equip your kiosk(s) with Wi-Fi software and an inexpensive Wi-Fi transmitter, which has a range of 200-300 feet under normal conditions. Laptop users with internal/external Wi-Fi cards who wish to surf the web are presented with a login/payment page. Users can then select between a variety of payment plans and pay with their credit card. Riva Logic authenticates the user's credit card and processes the payment, eliminating the need for you to have a merchant's account. Once a month, Riva Logic totals your Wi-Fi revenue and sends you a check minus a transaction fee.
This service is very flexible, allowing you to determine how much you would like to charge for Internet access. Plus, the low maintenance and overhead costs that are involved translate to high profit margins. At the same time, you can still utilize your kiosk for its primary function without compromising its functionality or speed.
